There's Treasure Inside: Appalachian Footpath Treasure Map Clues
Part 2 of the Appalachian Footpath treasure box chapter overview
Welcome! This is part 2 of the Appalachian Footpath treasure box chapter overview. In a previous newsletter I summarized the text.
Now let’s look at that map!
To recap just a little - the map is introduced to readers in the final paragraphs of the text. Jon talks about how his son (from chapter 1 story) inspired him to create a treasure map for this box.
Jon says its his first treasure map, and we’re asked not to ‘judge it harshly’.
He says “…I’ve basically admitted to you that this treasure is somewhere along the Appalachian Trail”
He also says:
“…all that’s left for you to do is follow this map.”
On the map are many features.
And while the trail/dashed path has been realized to match the AT and Green Mountain Trail surrounding Little Rock Pond area in Vermont - it is now being suspected that it could just be another feature on the map leading to a different location.
It could be a clue that the treasure box is still in Vermont - somewhere near the trail - but not on that particular trail.
There is another possible clue for Vermont being the state that I haven’t seen mentioned. The Appalachian Footpath passes through 14 different states. Vermont was the 14th state admitted to the union.
And while this certainly could be coincidental, it was mentioned on the MW Discord today that there may be a clue to Arkansas for the Pokémon Box by similar method.
In the Pokémon box chapter is the phrase: “halfway to the stars.” This could possibly allude to the stars of the American Flag - 50. Half is 25. Arkansas was the 25th state admitted to the union. It is also one of the most popular states thought for that box.
Regardless - the map consists of many mysterious items - words, icons, and other features… The trail passes through 14 states. If not in Vermont - it is in one of the others.
Appalachian Trail States:
Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.
Treasure Map and Icons
Begin Here
BEGIN can be turned to look like: N1938
It’s been suggested the Dog is a springer spaniel - and the beginning of the AT is on Springer Mountain in GA. (more on the other icons later)
With the heels darker on the footprints - near the words CAR NORTH - Jon definitely wants us to think ‘tar heels/North Carolina’ - but could there be another interpretation or use to this?
Also - the AT with XX’s. It’s been suggested AT is a sound clue. Say AT - 80. The AT CROSSES/XX’s - Route 80 at the Delaware Water Gap.
It’s been considered that each icon may connect to one of the 14 states the Appalachian Trail passes through.
The issue with this method is there are more icons than the 14 states. And some icons could relate to more than one state.
While the POI can be seen by just looking at the map - Under a magnifying glass (as suggested by being shown on the map) reveals what looks like High Point.
The 1727 and NE have questionable meaning. Depending on how the map is turned 1727 could be L2L1 and the E could be a W.
The edges shouldn’t be forgotten either. It seems the case for McAfee Knob, Va being shown can be made.
Jon has said he created the images with the help of AI. So some of what is on the map could be AI created - but obviously not all.
Deciding what is or not a clue - or how to use all the clues is proving difficult.
However, there have been some great ideas on what certain icons could mean - leading to possible locations for the box. Although not found - maybe someone is close!
Next week - I’ll go over various ideas for the icons and some theories on where the box could be. That will be in Part 3 for the AT Box Chapter.

This is a really great review of the pictograms! I recently sat down with another Substack author, and we talked about the pictograms, too, but found some really compelling connections to a couple of states within the text. I will have that video out shortly!
I am looking forward to your next overview!
