Week in Review - 3 Hunt Ideas You Might Have Missed
Plus! Justin Posey's Poem Line 2 - Wisdom waits - Shadowed Sight - Just Right
For the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing thoughts on each sentence of Justin Posey’s Treasure Poem. By the end we will have some great ideas for finding his treasure hidden in the American West - worth around a million!
Starting with Stanza 2 - I've decided to move these out of THE QUEST’s week in review/weekly recap posts. They’ll become in depth enough to have a post of their own.
But for now, I’ll continue with Stanza 1….
Last week I offered thoughts on the first sentence -
Can you find what lives in time,
Flowing through each measured rhyme?
Before moving on to the second sentence I wanted to add another thought - more a question to keep in mind about the first sentence - more specifically on the word ‘Find’.
Find is used twice in the poem. It is used again in line 6-
‘Return her face to find the place.’
This is interesting. Is there a connection? Does the ‘place’ we need to find - ‘live in time’? Might line 1 connect to the bride in some way? We’ll be exploring more on that later.
Beyond the Map’s Edge: First Stanza (line 2)
The second sentence in JP’s poem is:
Wisdom waits in shadowed sight-
For those who read these words just right.
It seems there could be multiple meanings, play of words, and yet still - clear instructions in this one sentence.
On the surface the line suggests that hidden wisdom can be found within the words, but only by those who read carefully and interpret them correctly.
However, Justin said the ‘first actionable clue’ is in the following line - suggesting there should be at least one clue in the first stanza to help us discover the general location to then be ‘actionable’ at.
Wisdom waits in shadowed sight-
Thoughts / ideas:
Wisdom - the town Wisdom, MT, the treasure, the treasure location, our knowledge gained
Wisdom (and light) is also referenced - his father being a point on the compass: ‘…my father’s wisdom as a guiding light’ (page 202).
Waits - wisdom is there now to be realized by us (either on location, in the poem, or both)
*Note: wait is used twice in the poem. Awaits is used once.
in shadowed sight-
hidden or ‘veiled’ (like a bride) - not in clear sight.
Shadowed sight could suggest a searcher casts a shadow to pinpoint the location of hidden treasure
For those who read these words just right.
Most take this part to mean that the searcher who interprets the correct meaning of the poem as a whole will find the treasure.
However, is there more meaning - a possible clue or two within the phrase - Just right?
Searchers have discussed how ‘Just right’ could hint to justifying the lines to the right to take note of the last letters of each line - or word. Maybe.
It’s also been linked to the story of ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’.
In that story Goldilocks tried the porridge, the chairs, and the beds to find the one ‘Just Right’. It’s thought there could be something to this.
Summary:
The sentence may be giving a general area to search (possibly Wisdom, MT)
The line could also suggest the treasure is hidden - not buried. It is in ‘shadowed sight’. (veiled - behind a waterfall)
Another thought is Wisdom is what you will gain - it waits for you to lift the veil (shadowed sight) - to find the treasure.
A shadow might need cast to find the treasure (or checkpoint) like in the first ever armchair treasure hunt - Masquerade (which is why it has to be ‘clear and bright’)
Just Right might be a clue to finding something in the ‘middle’ - like X marks the spot (more on this later)
Could be all of these (or none :))
Keywords: Wisdom, waits, shadowed sight, just right
3 Ideas You Might Have Missed
Each week lots of ideas get shared, discussed, or thought about on treasure hunts. Below are 3 ideas you might have missed.
1)There’s Treasure Inside: Past and Future Box
It is known the Word Search in the Past and Future box chapter contains the word OHIO. It is a proper noun - but we are told in the book - ‘You may ignore all three letter words and some proper nouns.’
May and Some being questionable as to what we are exactly supposed to do here.
Nonetheless - the text holds many connections leading to OHIO - and many feel it is a clue. It may be. But maybe not to location.
I think maybe it could be a clue to the fact that it has O’s at the end and beginning.
O- hi - O
It’s seen the O’s are used in the Word Search in a similar manner. Is that the real clue of OhiO?
2)Seven Paces: Vermont
The Seven Paces creators shared that they hid their treasure cache (valued around $2500) within the Little Rock Pond area of Vermont. The quote:
“Our hunt is in the LRP Area. Not Vermont in general. We want it to be an easy side quest—not have to travel across the state to participate.”
When I asked on the MW Discord after they shared images of their adventures searching for the Appalachian Footpath Box of TTI in the LRP area:
‘…Is your cache hidden along the various trails to access the pond?’
Their reply was: “Oh boy, that would be a big clue…”
Is this a clue to ‘Big Branch wilderness, stream, overlook, etc in the area.’ I think it could be!

3) Beyond the Map’s Edge
The cipher is not confirmed found - even though some ideas for it have been shared. We know the cipher is NOT in the poem and is to be a ‘nod’ to the mysterious container - that of course we will immediately recognize when we find it.
The word, Cipher, is used only a few times in the book. One of which is on page 182 when Justin says, “Forrest himself gave us this cipher, his childhood trousers stained rust-brown by his school’s iron fire escape.”
This supported Justin’s interpretation for ‘home of Brown’ in Forrest’s poem.
This isn’t really a ‘cipher’ though. It’s more of a code. BROWN = IRON.
But it is interesting that ‘iron Fire Escape’ could be a hint to the cipher having something to do with symbols on the periodic table. FE being Iron - and supported by the phrase - Iron fire escape.
Searchers have also noted the image on page 198 - with the T-shirt featuring the word, ‘ELEMENT’.
